GEWEP Project

The Association for the Promotion of Health for Communities Development “Sacode” considers that it is a mistake not to educate teenagers between 13 and 17 years on sexuality. In sex being taboo in Burundi, the SMS approach is the most confidential way to educate our youth on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Moreover Sacode also believes that women can play a very important role in the economic development of Burundi. It just needs proper training in the field of financial management, information on what is going on locally and elsewhere, know-how for good business management, access to financial resources for it to lead a rewarding and be autonomous.

Individualized support is the most appropriate, Sacode uses the SMS approach to educate these women, young girls and young boys on the Sexual and Reproductive Health, the violence based on gender, on the empowerment of women, but also monitor their progress.

With GEWEP, 282,000 women, 40,500 girls and 33,750 boys younger members of GS in the provinces of Kirundo, Muyinga, Kayanza, Ngozi, Gitega and Bujumbura Rural have access to education on gender equality, on the empowerment of women and sexual and reproductive health via SMS.

The SMS approach is very innovative and the results obtained in other initiatives until now are far superior to the results obtained in mass sensitization because it provides an opportunity for beneficiaries to participate at any time and ask individual questions. It is also important to mention that SACODE was honored with the innovative project price from Segal Family Foundation in July 2013.
