Interschool Competition on Menstrual Hygiene in Bururi

26 Oct 2024

Together, we can improve the lives of Burundians.

Across Burundi, our programs are empowering communities to live healthy lives and improve their living conditions.

On July 4, 2024, SaCoDé organized a competition between school clubs from the Fundamental School of Kinazi and Musagara, both located in Bururi province. This initiative, supported by ZOA Burundi, aimed to raise awareness among young people about critical issues such as menstrual health and hygiene, sexual and reproductive health, and good practices related to water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The competition concluded with prizes awarded to the winners, including notebooks, math kits, soap, and backpacks. This gesture recognized the students' efforts while encouraging their continued commitment to these important topics.

The event was held at the Fundamental School of Kinazi and brought together 60 students, who are members of the two school clubs. These clubs were established following specialized training for their mentors, known as "aunties" and "school fathers." These mentors subsequently trained the students within the clubs, playing a crucial role in guiding and raising awareness about menstrual hygiene and sexual and reproductive health.

The advisor to the Bururi Communal Education Director honoured the event with his presence and expressed his gratitude to the students, organizers, and participating schools. He praised this initiative, which not only values education but also helps break taboos surrounding menstrual hygiene and reproductive health. "Education on these subjects is not only important; it is vital for the well-being and future of our youth," he affirmed.
